Homemade Salad Dressing Guide

Personal Trainer Vancouver

As you all know (since we constantly talk about it) healthy fats are a VERY important part of your diet! Making your own salad dressing is an amazing and yummy way to get some of those healthy fats in! Homemade dressing is way less complicated than you probably think and after making my own for a long time, I find it very difficult to find a store bought one that I actually enjoy! A Traditional ratio is 3 parts oil to 1 part acid but many prefer the taste of 2:1 (dependant on how strong the vinegar you're using is). Taste as you mix and adjust accordingly. I typically use a mason jar and start by adding the oil and vinegar, shaking it and then follow it up with the emulsifiers and any flavours. There are 3 basic parts to a dressing: OIL/FAT: Olive Oil, Safflower Oil, Avocado Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Sesame Oil, Tahini, Nut Butters,

Coconut Milk (and many more) ACID: Red/White Wine Vinegar, Apple Cider Vinegar, Balsamic Vinegar, Rice Wine Vinegar,

Lemon/Lime Juice (and many more) EMULSIFIERS/FLAVOURING: Dijon/Grainy Mustard, Miso Paste, Honey, Mayonnaise, Yoghurt, Herbs, Spices, Garlic (and many more) The possibilities are endless! Here are some of my favourite, quick recipes: Balsamic Vinaigrette: 1/2C Olive Oil 3 TBSP Balsamic Vinegar 1 TBSP Dijon Mustard 1 clove Minced Garlic Salt & Pepper Honey Lime Vinaigrette: 1/2C Safflower Oil 2 TBSP White Wine Vinegar 1 TBSP Lime Juice 1 TBSP Honey Asian Sesame Vinegrette: 1/3C Olive Oil 2 TBSP Toasted Sesame Oil 3 TBSP Soy Sauce 1 clove Minced Garlic 1 tsp Chili Flakes 1 tsp Sesame Seeds There are so many great recipes out there and once you get the hang of the recipes it's easy to make up your own!
